Communication is central to all relationships…

Let’s admit that no one’s perfect!

Let’s admit we all need to grow.

All relationships are fueled by communication.

Paul gives us a contrast: Colossians 3:1-17

Anger, hateful, lies, foul language

vs.

gentle, kind, humble, meek, and patient.

Jesus gives us life lessons that match Paul’s Directions

1.  The foundation of communication is trust.  “Truly Truly I say to you.” Matthew 5:33-37

That’s serious business.  Jesus is saying the foundation of communication is trust.

Proverbs 13:17

Do you speak with integrity in the closest relationships of your life?  Or, do you and I erode trust

HOW?   Colossians 3:8-9

a. Intimidating  vs 8

b. Hateful and Hurtful  vs 8

c. foul (stinking) words  vs 8

d. Lying – breaking promise  v 9

“How do I break the cycle?”

2.  Jesus also taught us that communication is always from the heartMatthew 12:34

The source is Jesus – Colossians 3:1

a.  I have to refocus my heart.  Matthew 6:21

If I want to change the direction of my heart I have to change the location of my treasure.

b. I have to open my heart and let people in.  To be in relationships is to be vulnerable.

3.  Communication that makes a positive impact is positive.

Colossians 3:13-14

Proverbs 15:1~ Proverbs  24:26

Vs 14 Over it all put on LOVE

How did Jesus practice his communication?

1.  Jesus touched those whom He healed.  In Luke 5:13

2.  Jesus used questions to challenge.  …“do you love Me?”

Statements tend to confront.

3.  He used pictures to communicate new truths.

It didn’t always go well for Jesus.  Look at how Jesus handled those problems.

When Jesus was criticized, He gave a clear and confident response.

When doubted, Jesus offered proof.

And when ridiculed, He was silent
