What destroys Intimacy?

Which one of Solomon’s wives was this lady in Song of Songs?

In his earlier years Solomon was content with asking for wisdom and guidance from God.

Later he tried to use man’s wisdom and systems to gain favor, treaties and alliances with these other nations.

Even the wisest man on earth walked away from God’s best.

He took what was God’s plan and replaced it with man’s opinion and methods and each step was towards a cliff.

It could be summarized like this:  Take what you want, don’t miss any pleasure and you’ll be happy.

Solomon looks back on his life after he lived by man’s standards in Ecclesiastes 2:3-11 - …Suddenly I realized it was useless, like chasing the wind.

Whenever we seek to fulfill relationships with man’s wisdom, we fail; but when we seek after God’s plan for marriage, we find…

Genesis 2:23-25 - Intimacy without shame!

Song of Songs 2:15 - Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.

What Destroys Intimacy?

1.      Stupidity - Genesis 16:3-5

Maybe we need to learn sign language…

Not only does this show a lack of trust in God’s promise – it’s plain stupid!

Any fool would know that what Sarai needed was reassurance, not agreement.

How do I know what to do?  Ask!

2.      Selfishness - Philippians 2:3 - This is a level deeper, a bigger fox…

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.  --Philippians 2:3

Marriage is not 50/50, but 100/100

Anything less is selfish and unbiblical.

Philippians 2:4 -  Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

3.      Sin  - Proverbs 29:6

There is always a price to pay for sin.

Proverbs 5:3-23

Stupidity, selfishness and sin break down the intimacy without shame that God intended for your marriage.

Like little foxes, even the smallest steps toward these 3 S’s will destroy your vineyard.

Father, we pray with Solomon in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
